Central Grocery's Muffuletta

The muffuletta sandwich is one of the most famous sandwiches in New Orleans.  Layers of salamis, cheeses, and olive tapenade are served between thick slices of muffuletta bread, sprinkled with sesame seeds.  Central Grocery claims the title of making the "original muffuletta" and is therefore the most famous one on the market. Oddly enough, I have never made it to Central Grocery to order one.  Perhaps this is because one sandwich can feed upwards of four people because it is roughly the size of a Frisbee and is about 3 inches thick.

The SoFAB Culinary Library hosted New Orleans writer Carolyn Kolb on Saturday.  She recently published New Orleans Memories, which has several essays dedicated to New Orleans food traditions.  In honor of her book release, we picked up a muffuletta from Central Grocery to share.  As we prepared for the book signing and interview, we let the sandwich "rest."  This enabled the juices from the olive tapenade to soak into the bread, making the flavor combination even more complex and delightful.  The event was fabulous - not only did we enjoy this delicious sandwich (which made our hands slippery with olive oil) but we also got to meet a truly talented New Orleanian writer.
