The Blue Lagoon

On my "last day" in Iceland, I headed out to the Blue Lagoon -- probably the most famous public pool house in the country. It's basically a spa with a cool outdoor lagoon that is bright blue. This is a "naturally" occurring phenomenon and is the biggest tourist attraction in all of Iceland. Allegedly, the water has some amazing restorative quality and they have an entire line of beauty products that you can buy in the gift shop and all the tourist shops in Reykjavik...

So, I enjoyed splashing about in the really warm water (100 degrees). Funny, the one annoying thing was having to listen to English-speaking couples (yes, it was mainly couples) talk to each other. When I went to the local pool house in Reykjavik, everyone was speaking Icelandic and I could just relax and enjoy the tonal qualities of their language. But, at the Blue Lagoon I had to listen to a couple arguing with each other after the husband dropped (and lost) his wedding ring in the Blue Lagoon. We tried looking for it to no avail....I also had to listen to the dorky comments everyone was making as they put on their mud masks (this probably would have been hilarious if my friends were there with me joking about how slimy the mud felt etc., but I just wasn't having it as a single person trying to take a nap).

After a while, I headed over to the steam shower and waterfall area and then finally went back into the spa and headed to the Lava Restaurant for a super fancy, Icelandic-themed lunch.

The menu:

Rustic bread with red pepper spread

Torched salmon (Smoked onion, apple, watercress, horseradish)

Fried rack of lamb and grilled shoulder (Sun choke, pickled red onion, grapes, almond, chives)

Skyr and white chocolate mousse with rhubarb (Rhubarb and beetroot sorbet, warm pie, white chocolate crumble)

This is no exaggeration: the grilled shoulder of lamb was ABSOLUTELY THE BEST LAMB I HAVE EVER HAD...the first bite blew me away with its delicate flavor and perfect, melt-in-your-mouth texture. I didn't even know lamb could be like that...oh my! I would eat that dish everyday if I could! Seriously, the lamb alone is worth the trip to the Blue Lagoon!

The view of the Blue Lagoon from the restaurant was pretty sweet too! Did I mention the Lava restaurant is built into the face of a lava cliff? Pretty cool.
