Les Halles District

So, the National Library is right near the location of Les Halles. Sadly, Les Halles no longer exists. The structures were torn down in the mid-twentieth century and replaced with an underground shopping mall that has become the blight of the 1st arrondissement. Interestingly, the city of Paris is trying to re-make the image of Les Halles in Paris by renovating the neighboring park and aforementioned sketchy mall. I found the information posters on the renovation to be super interesting (particularly they way they romanticize the history of historic Les Halles and they way they are trying to re-shape Parisians' perceptions of this neighborhood). I want to revisit this topic later and draw a comparison between the renovation of Les Halles and that of the French Market in New Orleans (which underwent major restorations in the 1970s).
